Since 2000 the SSF have put more than 100,000 students on the stage in over 250 professional venues, making SSF the largest youth drama festival in the UK. Its aim is to create ever more 'Shakespeare Schools', where young people develop skills for life - communication, team work and self-discipline - whilst discovering the genius of Shakespeare. SSF inspires the disengaged as well as stretching the most able and motivated and is open to young people of every ability.
“Very simply Shakespeare is the best theatrical experience there is and getting to say the words and live the characters by doing the plays is the best way to unlock the door.”
Sir Nicholas Hytner
“They gain confidence, they gain the ability to stand up and speak in public, they gain the ability to work as part of a team, they gain the ability to be really creative.”
Dame Jenny Abramsky
“I think the educational impact of the Festival has been a profound one and it’s not just been attested to by our staff and students, we had ... an OFSTED inspection and we were able to showcase some of the scenes from our Othello to the inspectors and they were absolutely stunned by the quality of the performance. So we’re now and I think proudly, a Shakespeare School."
Principal, Lambeth Academy, Stephen Potter
